The graceful city of Gonder was founded by Emperor Fasilides around 1635, the city of Gonder serve as a 3rd permanent capital of Ethiopia from the rise of Fasilidas to the fall Tewodros famous for its many medieval castles and the design and the decoration of its churches. Flanked by twin mountains streams Gonder retains an atmosphere of antique charm mingled with an aura of mystery. The city was a vigorous and vital center of religious learning’s and art. For more than two hundred years skilled instruction in painting, music, dance, architecture, building technology, poetry and many other discipline flourished during those glorious era of Gonder time, Fasilidas and his successors saw their elegant capital as a phoenix and so patronized the arts.
Attractions those are concentrated in the city of Gonder include Bathing place of Emperor Fasilidas which is filled with water every year 19th of January for the fest of Timket, Ethiopian Epiphany, the famous medieval church of Debre Brehan Selase for the amazing angel ceiling paintings and the Quskuam Complex built by empress Mentwab beside that drive further to northward to visit the felasha village (Ethiopian Jew) and the edge of the simian mountain Escarpment.
